  • What Is an Integrated Propulsion Unit (IPU) and When Should You Use One?
Reflex Drive R6 IPU

Traditional drone builds start with a motor, add an ESC, choose a propeller, and then spend time making sure they work well together. An integrated propulsion unit (IPU) puts the motor, ESC and propeller in a single assembled unit that mounts directly on the arm.

Why use an IPU?

  • Less integration work. The components are already matched, so there is no separate wiring and tuning of motor, ESC and propeller.
  • Cleaner arms. One unit on the arm tube means fewer loose cables and a tidier airframe.
  • Documented performance. The datasheet describes the whole unit, such as thrust, power, weight, arm tube diameter and recommended take-off weight per rotor.

The Reflex Drive range

The R6 IPU lists 12.5 kg of maximum thrust, 800 g without a propeller and a 30 mm arm tube, for 3.5 to 5.5 kg per rotor at 48 V. The R8 IPU lists 14 kg of maximum thrust, 920 g without a propeller and a 40 mm arm tube, for 5.0 to 7.0 kg per rotor, and is listed as compliant with IPC Class 2 and certified to JSS 55555. The I8 Coaxial IPU is a coaxial unit built around a 115KV motor with a foldable propeller and overcurrent, over-temperature, low-voltage, throttle-loss and stall protection. When to choose separate components

If you want to mix and match, for example to use a particular propeller or ESC type, a separate motor, ESC and propeller still gives the most freedom. Our motor and propeller guide shows how to match them.
